MadHatter    --   Halloween 2009

Generated from publicity stills and preview footage of the upcoming Tim Burton film "Alice in Wonderland"  (release date: March 2010), this costume was created for a private client for personal use.

The jacket is a custom-dyed, handpainted wool overcoat with added cuffs and mismatched buttons. The pink fabric hanging out of the pocket matches the lining of the hat. The vest is double-dyed and handstamped with the textured diamond pattern.

Built out of 3/4" closed-cell foam with a pressed/shaped brim of 1/8" polyester/foam and measures 21" in height, this hat weighs  just over 2 lbs and the final wig is sewn directly in for ease of wearing.

These are the hatpins which are secured in the body of the hat.  They are hand-blown, silver-lined colored glass, wood, and Bakalite.

Here below is an initial shot of the spool-thread bandellero. It is assembed from a mixture of actual antique miniature thread  spools and mock-spools made of handcut, drilled 1" weathered dowel wrapped with embroidery floss. They are all strung together on a figure-8 laniard of silver-painted nylon twine and operate rather like a bicycle chain in their movement.

Pants are double-dyed wool, handpainted with  pinstripes. Tights are burnt-orange textured fabric custom stitched for the project. Shoes are from the wearer's private collection.

Above and left, the costume makes two of many Halloween appearances in Atlanta, GA.
